1/48 Airfix Spitfire Mk.1 – 303 Squadron

This is one of my earlier builds. I used the Airfix 1/48 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.1 and the Topcolors decal set for Polish Spitfires. This decal set covers scheme’s for aircraft used by the 303 squadron. The 303 Squadron was piloted by Polish pilots who escaped the occupation of Poland from Germany in World War II. The RAF formed the 303 Squadron and the pilots started out in Hawker Hurricanes. The squadron built up a reputation for their fearlessness, accuracy and skill during the Battle of Britain air war. Despite only joining midway, the 303 squadron would make the highest victory claims in the entire Battle of Britain, shooting down 126 German fighter plans in just 42 days.

Later they moved on the the Spitfire’s. With the success of the squadron during the Battle of Britain, many more squadrons were formed. As the war raged on, more Polish squadrons were created and Polish pilots also served individually in other RAF squadrons. By the end of the war, 19,400 Poles were serving in the PAF of the RAF. The PAF played a leading role in protecting Britain and defeating the Luftwaffe, in total destroying 957 enemy aircraft.

The aircraft I chose was flown by Flight Leader Wojciech Koiaczkowski from July 25 until the end of September in 1941.
